The kids at the One-Shot Project are totally rocking it! I had such a great time working with them in June & July and it’s great to see them continue their hard work!

ONE-SHOT aims at supporting organizations, groups, and schools that are already working with children in need. ONE-SHOT will look for talented children, and will provide them with education and vocational opportunities, through the teaching of photographic, documentary, and story-telling skills. These skills can provide students with a profession they can use their whole lives.

I’m currently residing in Sulaymaniyah in the Kurdish region of Iraq working for The One Shot Project. The One Shot Project  is a non-profit initiative bringing opportunity through vocational training to children living in adverse conditions. We provide photography and multimedia training, while teaching peacemaking values to children.
We’re teaching three groups (2 x level 1, 1 x level 2), please follow us along at the blog to see the amazing results of these talented and inspiring children.

A nice little interview (in Dutch!) with me, about The One-Shot Project

1 camera + 1 memory card = super happy kids

I volunteer with The ONE-SHOT Project.  We teach photography,
storytelling, and peacemaking skills to kids on the margins in Northern Iraq.  We need help to spread the word that we’re looking for
camera donations for four workshops we’re running this summer.

We know what photography geeks are like…  we upgrade our gear, and
tuck away our old gear as a back-up.  It doesn’t take long for us to
accumulate a lot of back-up gear.  There are millions of cameras
tucked away and never used.  35 lucky ones could be donated and sent
on an amazing adventure with some amazing kids!

© The One-Shot Project.

Our current needs are for 20 point & shoot cameras, and 15 DSLR camera
 bodies with lenses.

If you’d like to see a slide show of images our students made last
fall, you can see it at our blog.

None of our students (between 10-15 years old) had held a camera
before the workshop.  All of the images are straight out of the
camera.

I appreciate any help you give to spread the word! Drop me an email if you have a camera or memorycard left or if you’d like to donate money.

Iraq’s child prodigy

Just came across this great video via The One-Shot Project. Very inspirational to see such enthusiasm. “Iraq’s youngest photographer was born in the same year his country was invaded by the United States. But the young man known as the boy wonder refuses to take any pictures of the violence that surrounds him. Al Jazeera’s Rawya Rageh reports from Baghdad.”
